Abstract

Over a six year period, from 1999 to 2005, Frank Bechhofer and David McCrone, of Edinburgh University, oversaw an ambitious multidisciplinary research programme, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, on 'Constitutional Change and National Identity'. Clearly, this was designed to focus on the impact of the devolutionary measures set in train in 1997. Beyond this, though, both Bechhofer and McCrone, together with other contributors to this volume, had long been conducting research into questions of national identity, specifically within the context of the United Kingdom and its future. This volume, slim but densely packed, provides a valuable distillation of their findings, together with their reflections on what these might mean. The timeliness of the topic, the quality of the contributions, and the breadth of coverage ensure that this will be a volume much consulted and discussed in the continuing debates on national identities in the United Kingdom.
