Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) has long been considered the unique consequence of a tear and wear process leading to cartilage degradation. Indeed, it is true that an excessive mechanical stress on any joint leads to cartilage loss, with the production of osteophytes being considered a reactive process of the bone to protect and stabilize the altered joint (1). This initial paradigm has been slowly but deeply modified in the past 20 years due to critical discoveries (2).
