Abstract

SOUTH AFRICA HAS long been a fruitful field for the interaction of Christianity and politics. Its missionary tradition was fortunate in the early 19th century in stemming from Johannes Van der Kemp and John Philip, two exceptionally interesting and powerful characters who were both convinced that their religion had a great deal to say about slavery, colonialism and justice.
