Abstract

By 2007, more than 94,000 people had been registered as having a mental disability in Taiwan. Some with serious illnesses receive long-term care in institutions; many others with mild or moderate disability live with family carers and are looked after by them. In terms of service facilities, the number of psychiatric beds in hospital has increased significantly over the last 20 years. Now it seems that Taiwan is trying to redirect its service provision towards the community as an emphasis on community-based care can be found in the Mental Health Act, revised in 2007. The aims of this article are to review the history of mental health services and policy as well as to look forward to the future of mental health care in Taiwan.
