Abstract

This presentation was prepared for the 25th anniversary of the Polish Penitentiary Association. Its Editors suggested the invited authors to submit articles relating to four basic issues: 1) the dysfunctionality of the penalty of deprivation of liberty; 2) the alternatives to custodial sentences; 3) the problem of increasing participation in the population of prisoners with unfavorable criminal and social forecasts as a side effect of the development of an alternative to the penalty of deprivation of liberty (this is determined by the compression of the prison population); 4) the question of the complexity of the process of rational execution of the penalty of deprivation of liberty.
