Abstract

Multilevel inverters with modular structures are considered an excellent alternative for the grid and heavy industries due to their modular design. The Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) and the Modular Multilevel Inverter (MMI) are two of the most essential types of semiconductor devices. In this chapter, we review the different types of cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) topologies and how MMI reduce the harmonic content in a given current and/or voltage waveform produced by the inverter. MLIs are gaining popularity in medium-voltage, high-voltage, and renewable energy applications. In this chapter, five main submodules are considered the basic structure of multilevel inverters. The topologies are separated into various SMs to show traditional MLIs and future MLIs that can be obtained from the main SMs. A complete examination of the numerous varieties of CHB and MMI discovered in the specialist literature, fully illustrating their merits and downsides. Several future obstacles have been highlighted throughout the study, which will necessitate increased research effort on this critical scientific area.
