Abstract
This book represents the collected papers of a conference jointly sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the University of Miami School of Medicine. The authors of the reports presented represent both clinical and basic science fields, but the conference was motivated and dominated by clinical considerations. How long can the lung tolerate ischemia? When is shock reversible? What happens in the brain and heart with ischemia and anoxia? These kinds of questions form the basis of the investigations reported here. Clinicians are becoming more cellconscious in their thinking, at a time when the front line in basic medical research has moved to molecular structure and function. The clinician who has been away from his cellular physiology in medical school for a few years or more will discover some surprises in this volume.
