Abstract

Changes in the quadriceps H-reflex were used to study the effect of a weak cutaneous stimulation upon transmission in the Ib inhibitory pathways from triceps to quadriceps in man. At rest, such a stimulation applied to the anterior part of the foot sole depressed transmission, whereas during triceps voluntary contraction it facilitated it. This reversal is interpreted as a response to the changing requirements of complex movement.
