Abstract

Grid-scale stand-alone battery storage system draws increasing attention worldwide in recent years for its flexibility as well as decreasing cost. Up to date, electricity spot markets in China are under construction while market rules for storage system need to be designed aiming for a healthy environment for storage system development. In this paper, how grid-scale stand-alone battery storage station can participate in Zhejiang spot market and related bidding strategies are discussed. Expected monthly revenue for an actual battery storage station in Zhejiang under different bidding schemes are calculated based on actual clearing results from Zhejiang spot market, the monthly revenue is then transformed into an approximation of the storage station lifetime revenue. Results show that it is difficult for grid-scale battery storage station to recover its investment through spot energy market alone and the regulation market is much more appealing compared to energy market under current market rules in Zhejiang.
