Abstract

ABSTRACT Traditionally, psychotherapy supervision takes place as a conversation between the supervisor and a supervisee, but it has been argued that using an array of creative techniques can enhance the supervisory process. However, there has been limited empirical research in this area. This study explored the perspectives of supervisors when using creative techniques in psychotherapy supervision. Using grounded theory procedures, 13 experienced psychotherapy supervisors were interviewed in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and “Attaining Sight” of the supervision issue emerged as a main concern for supervisors. “Revealing the Unknown” was the framework that explained how participants dealt with this concern by using creative techniques in supervision. When the supervision issue was seen more clearly, it helped supervisors cope with their own discomfort and foster a more favorable supervisory encounter. In this article, the implications of using creative techniques in supervision are discussed.
