Abstract

The authors bring together diamond anvil cell techniques, infrared spectroscopy, a symmetry analysis, and lattice dynamics calculations to reveal the series of pressure-induced structural phase transitions in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr${}_{3}$Sn${}_{2}$O${}_{7}$. Remarkably, the pressure and temperature progressions are identical, and this information is used to develop the phase diagram. Pressure and probably strain are highly advantageous for device applications in this family of materials because the entire series of transitions can be triggered at room temperature.
