Abstract

In Almagest I.3 Ptolemy offers a series of arguments for the spherical shape of the heavens. These arguments were revamped by students of the Almagest in medieval Islamicate culture. The paper, which was presented at the Alamgest Conference held at the Warburg Institute, London, November 2015, examines how Ibn al-Haytham, Jabir ibn Aflah, and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni reworked, and at times challenged, Ptolemy's arguments.
