Abstract

In this chapter a novel approach to understanding the final form of the Pentateuch is proposed. It is argued that the formation of the Pentateuch from independent and theologically distinct sources is an important guide for how we might read the final form. An interpretive method is proposed that emphasizes the complementary reading of the pentateuchal sources while still concentrating on the canonical text. This chapter is intended to demonstrate that the literary-historical approach is not in opposition to final-form meaning, but can rather contribute to the understanding of the final form and even to the creation of new meaning for contemporary theological interpreters.
