Since the publication of The Study of the Human Being in Pascal by Miki Kiyoshi in 1924, the question of the human being as 'ningen', or the 'being-between', has been repeatedly asked by Japanese writers who were engaged in philosophical debates both inside the academia of national colleges and universities and, outside it, in intellectual journalism, which was rapidly growing with the increasing number of subscribers to newly founded intellectual journals like Shiso, Kaizo, and Riso.
