Abstract

Purpose: Hamstring injuries are a significant concern in football owing to prolonged absence from competition. Predicting hamstring muscle injury and determining clinical or imaging consensus for safe return-to-play are challenging. With its potential to assist injury classification, management and prediction, use of the British Athletics Muscle Injury (BAMI) classification to inform precision rehabilitation may expedite time to return-to-play (TRTP) and reduce recurrence. To date, no research has assessed use of the BAMI classification in elite male professional football players. The objective was to evaluate use of the BAMI classification and its association with TRTP and recurrence rate following hamstring injury in elite male football players.
