Abstract

Most data cemter owners overvalue the initial cost of chillers versus the energy costs. Therefore, they will sub-optimize a chiller system by purchasing one that has a lower energy efficiency ratio than the optimum. This paper provides you as a design engineer with the analysis tools you need to convince a owner to invest in the optimum chiller. The return on investment in the optimum chiller exceeds the minimum acceptable rate of return: a good business decision. Assuming the electricity is created from fossil fuels, the investment also results in benefits to the environment as the optimum system produces less pollution and global warming gases. Reduced fuel consumption also increases the sustainability of the earth’s limited resources.
