Abstract

When I got my assignment to discuss the Soci ety's history between 1977 and 1982 I was a little disappointed that I had not been given one of the earlier, more "colorful" periods in the Society's history. The late 1970s had little to recommend them in terms of intellectual, social, or fashion interest, and being what my stepchildren call a "60s person," I was hoping for an opportunity to reminisce about those earlier halcyon days. (Clearly, Chuck Cleland knew what he was doing when he made the assignments.) For example, I specifically was hoping for 1971?the year I joined the Society, and the year in which the entire Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) happily fit into one standard double room in the Holiday Inn in Tallahassee, Florida, for the cocktail reception. The annual meeting that year also happened to share the Holiday Inn with George Wallace and his entourage, who were campaigning in Tallahassee that weekend. Confused reporters interviewed Wallace supporters and archaeologists alike, and Stan South was so compelling that they aired his interview on Tallahassee TV. Jim Deetz
