Abstract

A large retroesophageal abscess became apparent 25 days after esophagoscopy. Prominent anterior cervical vertebral osteophytes probably contributed to a crush injury of the upper esophagus. Complete recovery followed drainage of the abscess. Misadventure after endoscopy may appear late and without the expected symptoms.
