Abstract

The S s learned a serial list of high- or low-frequency words by either the typical serial method, in which there is a constant starting position (CSP) on each trial of learning, or the varied starting-position (VSP) method of learning, in which the starting cue is changed on successive trials. This was followed by either the interpolation of a paired-associate (PA) list of re-paired first-list words (experimental) or a nonlearning task (control). Finally, S s were asked to recall the serial order of the original serial list. The hypotheses that the recall of serial order would be disrupted by the learning of the PA list and that this disruption would be greater for the VSP condition were confirmed.
