Abstract

This article discusses the design of automated information-retrieval systems which accept questions in ordinary English and yield as output a numerical answer. Fundamental to the efficient implementation of such a system is the notion of retrieval formulae. These formulae are representations of search strategies in the artificial language of a retrieval automaton. As a first step, a linguistic processor maps English questions into this artificial language. Subsequently, the system will conduct the appropriate search to satisfy the requirements of each formula. The method is illustrated with references to a fortran program which retrieves information from a data base obtained from the field of Astronomy.
