Abstract

This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal ( https://www.elsevier.com/about/our-business/policies/article-withdrawal ). The article has been retracted at the request of the Editor-in-Chief. Although the text has been rephrased, the whole content is largely identical with the article accepted in the CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology, “Improvement of mechanical properties of AA5083 in shipbuilding applications by adding nano ceramic powders of silicon dioxide Si2O3 via friction stir processing technique”, Majed H. Moosa, Yasmin A. Abdelraouf, W.M. Farouk, Eyd M. ELSayed, W.M. Shewakh, Ahmed Abu-Oqail, Hanan A. The manuscript was submitted to the CIRP Journal on April 20, 2020 and to the Journal of Alloys and Compounds on April 28, 2020, falling into the category of double submission. A detailed comparative analysis of the figures in these two articles revealed the following conclusion: - Fig. 1, lower right: identical to CIRPJ-Fig. 1, right. Strangely enough, it is claimed that this is a magnification of Fig. 1, lower left, which is obviously not the case. Fig. 1 upper right is claimed again to be a magnification of Fig. 1 lower right, which is also not the case. Figure captions are identical. - Fig. 2, right: more or less identical with JIRPJ-Fig. 2, right. Identical text below the figure, identical figure caption. - Fig. 4 (b): identical with JIRPJ-Fig. 4, lower part. Almost identical figure caption. - Fig. 7 (a), upper part: identical with CIRPJ-Fig. 17 (a). - Fig. 7 (b), upper part: identical with CIRPJ-Fig. 17 (b). Captions almost identical. - Figs. 8 and 9 and 13 and 20–23 with similar meaning as CIRPJ-Figures 15, 18 and 19 (lower part), 20 (lower part), 21, 22, 23. - Fig. 10 identical with figures in CIRPJ-Table 6, lower two pictures in the middle row. - Fig. 12 (lower part): very similar to CIRPJ-Fig. 25 lower part, with some conditions varying a bit. - Fig. 14: identical with figures in CIRPJ-Table 3, lower two pictures in the middle row, plus CIRPJ-Table 2, third picture in the middle row. - Fig. 16 (a): identical with JIRPJ-Fig. 7, upper right, including partial figure caption. - Fig. 17: identical to JIRPJ-Fig. 10, including figure caption. - Fig. 19: identical to JIRPJ-Fig. 14, including figure caption. The corresponding author and the co-authors were informed about this decision. One of the conditions of submission of a paper for publication is that authors declare explicitly that their work is original and has not appeared in a publication elsewhere. As such this article represents a severe abuse of the scientific publishing system. The scientific community takes a very strong view on this matter and apologies are offered to readers of the journal that this was not detected during the submission process.
