Abstract

Abstract We have reported two approaches based on interferometric spectrum and near-field terahertz time-domain system (NFTDS) for measuring the refractive indices of the single-mode germanium core fiber at the infrared band and the terahertz-band, respectively. A Fabry–Perot (F–P) cavity was designed inside the germanium core optical fiber (GCOF) via arc discharge with a cavity length of 40. 3 μ m . By analyzing the interference spectrum, a refractive index of 4.65 at 1. 57 μ m has been detected. In addition, a NFTDS was also employed to measure the refractive index of the GCOF based on the phase difference of the signal due to its propagation along the fiber. A refractive index of 4.01 at 1 THz was measured. The results are in good agreement with their theoretical or experimental references.
