This article is being retracted as a result of (i) overwhelming evidence that the distributions of many variables reported by Dr. Fujii in this study could not have occurred by chance 2, 3; (ii) the conclusions of an investigation conducted by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists 4; and (iii) the inability of Dr. Fujii's institution to attest to the integrity of the study and/or its data conducted under its/their auspices 5, as set out in the Joint Editors-in-Chief Request for Determination of April 9, 2012 6.
