Abstract

In order to reduce the water loss caused by water surface evaporation, the anti-evaporation effect and water-saving benefit of water surface evaporation by different physical materials and coverage rates are analyzed. Three materials: PE bottle, HDPE ball and plastic film plate were used to cover the evaporation pools by 50%, 75% and 90% of the water surface area respectively. The results show that the evaporation reduction effect increases with the increase of the coverage rate with the same material. HDPE ball has the best effect of evaporation reduction among the three materials. Plastic film plate has better effect than PE bottle under 50% and 75% coverage rate, and the opposite under 90%. The water-saving benefit of all the three materials are negative, and the negative benefit increases with the increase of coverage rate. HDPE ball has the lowest water-saving cost and the smallest negative benefit. It is the most suitable material for evaporation reduction in terms of evaporation reduction effect and cost and benefit. The study is helpful to improve the effective water-saving in arid area in an environmentally and economically friendly context. • The water surface temperature of the covered pool is higher than the no-covered one. • PE bottle, HDPE ball and plastic film plate were chosen as the test materials. • HDPE is the most suitable materials with low cost and high anti-evaporation effect.
