Abstract

Dear Editor, Leigh Sherriff’s letter in MHP (11, 7,13) regarding the stresses faced by newly qualified nurses was very interesting. In the same issue, Victoria Clarke’s article (MHP 11, 7, 14-17) about the vicarious trauma experienced by mental health nurses made similar points. Both writers referred to the stress that nurses beginning their careers endure. What they did not mention was the stress experienced by nurses, like me, who have just retired from a full-time career as a mental health nurse in the NHS. Just as the newly qualified nurses have to endure a change in status and adapt to becoming answerable for their professional actions, we retired nurses have to adapt to a life without the constant demands made on us. It is a weird experience.
