Abstract
This chapter presents a systematic approach for optimal dynamic VAR resource planning and upgrading for a power system with increased wind power penetration and equipment retirement. The problem consists of two parts: aged equipment retirement and new equipment placement. A multi-objective optimization model is formulated to minimize three objectives: (i) the cost of retirement and upgrades, (ii) the index of proximity to steady-state voltage collapse, and (iii) the index of transient voltage unaccepted performance. The proposed model also considers the high-voltage ride-through and low-voltage ride-through abilities of wind farms. The proposed model is tested on a New England 39-bus test system.
