Abstract

Microvascular dysfunction (MVD) is known as a classical complication of diseases like diabetes and hypertension. However, MVD is also known as a cause in the (early) development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. In addition, MVD has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular mortality.Measuring MVD in‐vivo is demanding, and, therefore, a broad application of these techniques in clinical studies has been lacking. One exception in this regard is analysing microvascular function in images of the retina. Many studies in various cohorts have consistently shown for instance that reduced retinal microvascular diameters are not only associated with current high blood pressure, but are also associated with as increased risk for developing hypertension in the future. Similar findings, changed diameters and risk prediction, have been found for diabetes. In the present lecture, an overview will be presented on the latest concepts and examples of retinal microvascular changes in structure and function in relation to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
