Abstract

The current paradigm for interpretation of retinal hemorrhages (RH) focuses on diagnosis of abusive head trauma based on severity of RH, for which classifications have been published. While RH severity has value, there is overlap in severity between accidental and abusive injuries, some patterns are diagnostic even if RH are not severe, and medical diagnoses are not addressed. We sought to develop a new paradigm for RH interpretation using patterns that distinguish medical from traumatic causes of RH.
