Abstract

The 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America provided a wealth of opportunities to reflect on his legacy—not only in the past, but also in the future. World trends reflecting the colonial mindset of exploitation may be seen as a key ingredient in the exponential growth in ecological load that, if continued, threatens to overshoot the carrying capacity of the planet. North/South university-business collaboration, involving an innovative ‘countertrade’ technology, is suggested as a way to help counteract some of these trends, and provide a new basis for livelihood.
