Abstract
1894년 한국에서 발생한 민족사적 대사건으로서의 동학농민혁명과 동아시아 지역사의 대사건으로서의 청일전쟁을 재현하는 시각은 양자를 별개의 사건으로 보는 입장과 하나의 통합된 사건으로 바라보는 입장으로 구분된다. 한국 정읍의 동학농민혁명기념관과 중국 웨이하이(威海)의 갑오전쟁박물관은 모두 전자의 시각에서 전시를 구성하고 있으며, 한국의 전쟁기념관도 청일전쟁을 한국인이 겪은 전쟁의 목록에서 제외하고 있다. 그러나 전통적인 중국 중심의 지역 질서의 해체기에 발생한 두 사건은 조선의 국제적 지위를 둘러싼 국제적 논쟁과 조선의 청에 대한 원병 요청 그리고 동학농민군에 대한 진압 작전에서의 일본의 지휘권을 매개로 하여, 동심원을 그리는 하나의 지역전쟁으로 인식되어야 한다. 이런 맥락에서 청일전쟁은 조선을 포함한 동북아시아전쟁으로 재규정되어야 하며, 동학농민혁명기념관은 청일전쟁에 관한 전시를 좀더 적극적으로 포함하여 새롭게 재구성될 필요가 있다.
