Abstract

Nuclear power is not even a viable option for US electric utilities despite an apparent need for new generating capacity by the end of the century. To reverse the trend will require fundamental restructuring within the US nuclear industry and a re-examination of assumptions about nuclear power by the public. The author reviews some of the factors which have brought misfortune to an industry which has succeeded abroad and outlines an approach based upon lower power and central fabrication of components. This combination would increase safety and make reactors easier to site. The industry must take the initiative to improve compliance with regulations. The government and the industry could agree upon a safe technology to pursue as a joint demonstration or wait for one technology to emerge as acceptable. 8 figures.
