Abstract

For describing energy losses of fast electrons (50 eV) in solids with large dielectric constant ϵ by means of the semiclassical theory retardation effects are important, especially if ϵ 1β 2 >1 (condition for C̆erenkov radiation). Due to this radiation, additional peaks, observed in the energy loss spectra of GaP, Si etc., can be explained; position and absolute intensity are in qualitative agreement with theory.
