Abstract

Abstract Retail planning in post‐war Britain has been characterised by a concentration on existing resources and severe limitation of suburban expansion. A central part of this strategy is the redevelopment of older inner‐city retailing areas. The morphological, organisational and structural changes generated by these developments are of considerable interest to urban geographers with an interest in retailing. The present study seeks to extend our knowledge of the processes underlying such changes by means of a detailed empirical examination of the redevelopment of an inner‐city retailing centre in Glasgow.
