Resuscitation and Artificial Hypothermia

Abstract

The author's preface suggested an interesting book which covers the areas of cardiac massage, intra-arterial transfusion, defibrillation of the heart, restoration of breathing, maintenance of the viability of the brain, role of hypothermia, clinical application of experimental findings, use of this material by anesthesiologists, and a comparison of the author's results with reports in the literature. To the reviewer this book has three intermingled phases. They are historical development, a survey of the then current (1961) literature, and a polemic for the author's ideas, especially with regard to intra-arterial transfusions. The historical development is interesting and yields to the American reader many European source references. Like all surveys of the current literature, this book was out of date the day it was written. The reader will also find many references in the English language missing, references that most readers would consider important (this despite a 39 page bibliography). The translator
