Abstract

The INNOTRACK - Innovative Track Systems research and development project was formally closed on 31 December 2009. The outcome of the project is summarized in some 140 deliverables. The research in INNOTRACK focuses on mixed traffic and deals with three key parts of the track, namely track support structure, switches and crossings, and rails and welding. The innovative results from INNOTRACK are, in addition to the technical analysis, scrutinized from a life-cycle cost and a reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety perspective as well as from a logistic standpoint. The results show that significant cost reductions are possible to reach. The article gives a short overview of INNOTRACK and then goes into more detail on some results with bearing on heavy haul operations.
