Results of the Chernihiv Suburbs Research in 2018

Abstract

Archaeological research on the suburb of old Rus Chernihiv allowed to explore a new section of the city and trace its development. In the Xth – early XIth centuries ancient shore of the river Strizhen was occupied by a burial ground. There were investigated three female burials with a variety of implements – jewelery made of precious metals, iron knives, pottery vessels, a wooden bucket, etc. In the XI-XIIth centuries the city is rapidly expanding and housing-economic units begin to appear at this site. The close proximity of the population to the water artery contributes trade relations, that has evidenced by the numerous finds of fragments of amphorae, Byzantine coins, fragments of scales, etc. The variety of individual finds from personal Christian piety and precious jewelery to household equipment can be indicated by the rather intensive development of this part of the Chernihiv suburb at the end of the 11th-12th centuries
