Abstract

Abstract Thisarticlepresentssomespecificaspectsofstandardization of the technical requirements tograde-separatedintersections with due regard to the regulatory framework ofthe Russian Federation. Giventhechangedtrafficconditionsin the country inthelast 30 years, there is a need to developmodern requirements todesigning ofgrade-separated freeway intersections. Thekeyareaofimprovement of regulatory environment is harmonization and standardization ofdesign solutions. Developmentofsuchrequirementsmustbebasedontheanalysisofexistingtraffic conditions in the country road networkin general and at grade-separated intersectionsin particular. Being aware of the factthatit is the left-turntrafficvolume thatdetermines the intersection type, the authorobtained and presented the findings of the studiesfocusing on road traffic flow onleft-turn exits from grade-separated intersectionswith due regard to the currenttrafficenvironmentin the Russian Federation. Thestudywas conducted ontheroad network within catchment areasof the major urban agglomerationsof the Russian Federation: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Kaliningrad and Sochi in 2016 and 2017. Thestudyfocusedontheintersections of roads of thefirst technical category (freeway) with the following road categories: I (freeway), II (undivided highway), III (collector road) and IV (local road). Statisticalprocessingofthemeasurementresultsprovidedpooled data onthevehicletraffic flowat the exitsfrom grade-separated intersections. Itshouldbenotedthatthese findings can provide a rationale forintroducing a classification of road intersectionsin the Russian Federation.
