Abstract
The postoperative course of 139 patients who underwent closure of a loop transverse colostomy at St. Mark's Hospital between 1961 and 1970 after distal resection and anastomosis of the large intestine for neoplastic or diverticular disease has been reviewed in detail. There were no deaths and the incidence of breakdown at the site of the colostomy closure was 2.9%. The procedure can be straightforward and safe.
