Abstract

Abstract A rapid method developed at the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory for determining the durability of glue joints in laminated beams intended for exterior service is described. The test is based upon the principle that severe shrinking and swelling of laminated members produce stresses, which cause checking of wood, failure of glue joints, or both. Vacuum and pressure are employed in bringing about the desired conditions of shrinking and swelling. Results of the test are correlated with more extended laboratory exposures and with long-term soaking and weathering.
