Abstract

Santa Fe International Corporation owns and operates four deep water harsh environment jack-up drilling units in the North Sea. The capacity of such units to resist the maximum winter storm environment in this region is a hotly debated topic within the offshore engineering community. This debate is fuelled in large part by uncertainty in our ability to predict accurately a jack-up's physical response to its environment as well as uncertainty as to what effect that response has on the jack-up structure. The level of uncertainty regarding jack-up response can be reduced through well executed measurement programs and a number of such programs have been undertaken on comparable units [Brekke, J. N., Murff, J. D., Campbell, R. B. & Lambe, W. C., Calibration of jack-up leg foundation model using full-scale structural measurement. OTC 6127, 1989; Brekke, J. N., Campbell, R. B., Lambe, W. BOSS, London, 1992; Joint Industry project on jack-up instrumentation, Instrumentation of Sante Fe Galaxy at Ranger Block 29-4B. Confidential to membership, project managers: Noble Denton Consultancy Services, London, 1993.] Santa Fe decided, during the construction of their last three jack-ups, Monitor, Galaxy I and Magellan, that a permanently installed instrumentation system would be an invaluable aid to increasing overall understanding of jack-up behaviour, and in the long term would improve their marketability. This paper describes the results obtained from an analysis of measurements taken while Magellan was alongside Amoco's Central North Sea Everest platform in Block 22/10 in 88·4 m of water.
