Abstract
An increasing number of patients are treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to advances in medicine. Usually, healthcare professionals decide on the patientâs care in order to save the patientâs life. Sometimes, these actions conflict with patientsâ rights and autonomy. For example, the application of restraint in incompetent patients in the ICU violates patientsâ rights to freedom and self-decision. We reviewed the definition, prevalence, patterns, predictors, and guideline of restraints in the ICU setting. Key Words: Restraint; Intensive care unit; Physical restraint; Guideline
