Abstract
ISSUE: Foley catheters are useful tools in health care; however they can also harm patients (pt) by causing infection, discomfort, trauma, restraint, and loss of dignity. Unfortunately, Foleys are used inappropriately, as documented in the literature and observed at MVAMC. Providers are unaware which of their pt have a Foley in place, and these “forgotten Foleys” are apt to be clinically non-indicated. Problems identified included verbal orders for Foleys without a Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) order and Foleys not removed despite an order to discontinue (d/c).
