Abstract

Health Fitness Dynamics, a spa consulting firm, helped to restore the historic Homestead Spa in Hot Springs, Virginia. As part of the reconstruction effort HFD decided to modernize the spa's concept by allowing coed use of facilities. While the building was gutted, the spa remained open by moving some facilities to nearby guest rooms. Key to the building program was a concept that allowed treatment rooms to be used by groups or individuals, as needed, by opening or closing doors. HFD also conducted pre-opening training to introduce the new facility and new treatment concepts to the three dozen spa employees, many of whom had been on staff for well over a decade. Employees responded favorably, with a result of favorable guest comments and financial results that exceeded management's expectations.
