Abstract
When NATO moved into Kosovo in June 1999 there was no indigenous power generation. UK Royal Engineers were tasked with restoring power within Kosovousing the existing generating capability and distribution system, which were both in a very poor condition. UK industry expertise provided the knowledge to enable the military to reopen a lignite mine, assess and repair power lines and finally restart a single generator thus restoring mains power to much of Kosovo. This paper highlights the interactions between the local labour force, the UK military, various non-government organisations and UK experts.
