Abstract

Aboriginal people in Australia are among the most imprisoned people in the world, and Western Australia has the highest Aboriginal to non Aboriginal imprisonment ratio in Australia. As an alternative to imprisonment, justice can only be relevant to Aboriginal people if it develops a restorative vision and engages with a range of justice issues of concern to Indigenous people. This would entail coming to terms with traditional law, which encompasses a diversity of practices. There are signs that specific Indigenous justice practices are developing in Western Australia, particularly in relation to family violence, where victims want intervention strategies that stop violence but leave families intact.
