Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the diagnosis, management and treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS can be a distressing condition which can cause serious sleep deprivation and have significant impact on an individual's quality of life and safety. The prevalence of adults whose RLS is severe enough to warrant medical consultation has been estimated to be around 3% of the population (Henning, 2004), but the disease is under-recognized and a much larger proportion of the population (up to 10%) may have RLS symptoms (Phillips, 2000). Nurses can be at the forefront in managing individuals with RLS more appropriately in several areas: through early identification of those who may have the condition so that a diagnosis can be established, by alerting sufferers to self-management strategies that help them to cope with their symptoms and by referring those who have more severe problems for pharmacological treatment.
