Abstract

Abstract The current certification of entry level health education specialist (CHES) process is predicated upon the assumption of a core of responsibilities and competencies required of practitioners in all health education settings. However, many health education professional preparation programs continue to structure training by practice setting. This article suggests the need for a collaborative, competency based approach to health education professional preparation that uses the Role Delineation Project Areas of Responsibility as a foundation. Emerging trends in health education illustrate the need for this approach. Suggestions for addressing these trends through a collaborative, competency based professional preparation program structure are provided.
