Abstract

1. Effects of varying amounts of continuous shade, 0%, 50%, 75%, and 90%, on the growth and development of two oat varieties, Andrew and Cherokee, were studied. 2. The number of days from planting to maturity was increased as the percentage of shade was increased. 3. Increased shade resulted in decreases in plant height, number of head-bearing tillers, and in dry weight of the grain and straw. 4. Amount of shade had no apparent effect on the 100-kernel weight.
