Abstract

This paper describes a method for developing response-based decision trees (DTs) to trigger stabilizing control. The DT inputs are apparent resistance R and its rate of change Rdot measured near the electrical center of the Pacific AC Intertie (PACI). The method involves triggering a fixed combination of one-shot controls when a DT trained for stability prediction indicates impending loss of synchronism. The proposed scheme is able to prevent loss of synchronism across the PACI in many situations, and it can preserve stability for the entire network sometimes. Robustness is demonstrated by evaluating the fixed control combination on a large number of simulations.
