Abstract
The aim of this paper is to look at two varieties of English, British English 2 and Irish English, within the framework of variational pragmatics, using corpus linguistics as a methodological tool in order to assess its usefulness (and limitations) to research in this area. Our analytical focus for this investigation is response tokens, a discourse feature seen as a core part of spoken grammar (McCarthy 2002, 2003, Carter & McCarthy 2006).
